Author: Christopher Pennell, Illustrated by Rebecca Bond

I know they say you're not supposed to judge a book by it's cover, but I've been really pleased with some very well illustrated books lately. Rebecca Bond did some great artwork on this one, that's for sure! Of course the cover really drew me in, but there are also pictures every five to ten pages throughout the book to enjoy also.
I was intrigued to read that the author Christopher Pennell didn't major in literature, and this is his first novel...which are usually signs that you're about to enjoy a really good book!
The main character, Carly, hears some mysterious sounds one night. Could someone be playing music? Since she mainly sleeps during the day, the night time is her time to explore. What she finds...a fiddle playing, talking rat of course! His name is Lewis and he loves nothing more than to play the fiddle. He does come with a set of obscure rules that frustrate Carly..."The rule about having to use a vegetable when a band loses one of its members - and the rule about always playing with three instruments - and the rules about only playing in moonlight and always playing up high."
Will Carly finally get to the bottom of all this? Will some of these rules drive her a little crazy?..."Her aunt had obviously been in her room, since Carly was now lying on her bed and there was a cold lump of squash casserole in a bowl on her night table. Carly knew it was ridiculous, but she went to the window and closed her curtains so that the squash on her roof couldn't see her eating it."
I hope you are able to check out this fun and mysterious adventure. I know I am glad I did.

Kelly

This sounds like a really fun book too! You are really recommending a lot of books lately!
ReplyDeleteYou wouldn't believe how many I come across that aren't so great. I usually just make sure I get a couple of picture books and chapter books at the library, and then just read and review the ones I really like. :)
